Foodies, rejoice! Santa Ynez Valley Restaurant Week is upon us from January 22 to January 28! At this one of a kind series of events, food aficianados can get taste after taste of all the delicious fare the Santa Ynez Valley has to offer. And for those of you who love wine, you couldn’t pick a better place to go on a restaurant tour.

Santa Ynez Valley Restaurant Week 2012 will feature restaurants throughout the Valley that are offering a special 3-course tasting menu for an unbelievable price – $20.12 (see what they did there?). We have a full calendar of events happening in the Santa Ynez Valley that lists everything the area has to offer, but here are some of the highlights this holiday season.

  • In Solvang we celebrate Julefest annually throughout December to celebrate the Christmas season. Solvang decorates its half-timbered houses and windmills with lights, and the streets are filled with festivities including music, dance, food, parades and more. What could be better for getting into the Christmas spirit?
  • In Los Olivos, we have Olde Fashioned Christmas where you can join residents and travelers alike in the streets to enjoy pleasant luminaries, popcorn and roasted walnuts, and local merchants to celebrate the holiday season. Not to mention musical performances and a tree lighting ceremony!
  • Buellton has its annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony complete with singing, a visit from Santa Claus and cookies galore. This is made even more special when carolers sing through the neighborhoods of Buellton.
  • In Santa Maria, the PCPA Theaterfest will perform the unforgettable holiday masterpiece, A Christmas Carol, a songful adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic tale. It reawakens the true spirit of Christmas at the Marian Theatre in Santa Maria.
  • In Santa Barbara, you can find The Christmas Revels: In Celebration of Winter Solstice this year. This is a Bavarian celebration of winter solstice set in the early 19th century Bavaria at Yuletide! It’s filled with song, dance and stories originating in Nordic and German traditions. The cast features 70 actors, singers, dancers and instrumentalists and will perform at Lobero Theatre.

    • Christmas is a wonderful time of year to spend in many of the towns in the Santa Ynez Valley, and there is no shortage of ways to ring in the holiday season. (I mean, look at the calendar for August 2011 alone! It’s jam-packed with amazing stuff to see and do.) Many are ongoing events that are staples in the Santa Ynez community, some are annual festivals or events that made our area famous, and some are special one-time opportunities that you don’t want to miss. Here are some of our favorite events to take part in when you’re in the area!

    REGULAR HAPPENINGS IN SANTA YNEZ

  • Farmers Markets-There are farmers markets to be seen in so many neighborhoods in the Santa Ynez valley, and many of them are even year-round! Check out the Solvang Village Farmers Market every Wednesday afternoon, the Los Olivos Farmers Market on Saturdays when it’s in season, the occasional Buellton Farmers market and so on.
  • Wine Tastings – This is truly an ongoing, constant happening in the Santa Ynez Valley! You’re in wine country, my friends. There are so many amazing vineyards and wineries for a true wine appreciator to visit and enjoy. Check out our list of Santa Ynez Wineries and Wine Tastings for a more comprehensive list of wineries to visit, and don’t forget to download the Sideways movie wine tour map!

    • YEARLY EVENTS IN SANTA YNEZ

  • There are many wonderful annual events in the Santa Ynez Valley worth mentioning, but a few of my favorites are:
    Vintners Festival – The Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Association hosts the Vintners Festival Weekend annually, and it draws wine lovers far and wide to meet vintners, taste numerous wines, and appreciate delicious food and wonderful music. Typically this wine country event is held in April.
  • Amgen Tour of California Bicycle Race – This bicycle race passes through beautiful Solvang each May. It is the largest cycling in event in America, and Amgen is a national initiative to increase awareness for cancer prevention and survivorship.
  • Blues Festival – Every year in January is the Blues Festival at the Royal Scandinavian Inn in Solvang, which always has an amazing lineup of incredibly talented blues musicians you won’t want to miss.
  • Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon – This half marathon is an event beloved by many elite runners that typically happens in May each year. The wine country half marathon rewards the best times with – what else? – wine! (Among other great prizes.)
  • Celebration of Harvest – This annual event is held in October, when the Santa Barbara county area is right in the midst of wine grape harvests. This is the perfect time to visit Santa Ynez to taste the many new wines that will come onto the market!
  • Old Santa Ynez Day – One of my absolute favorite Santa Ynez Valley events is Old Santa Ynez Day, which happens each June. It’s loaded up with food, arts and crafts, live entertainment and a parade. It’s fun for the whole family!
