Mid March 2008 By Helen Tarbett, Los Padres National Forest Service Ranger

"They're back!" With our warm, spring-like weather in early March, the wildflowers at the lower elevations have decided it is time to show off. You are in for a treat! Start your wildflower viewing on Figueroa Mountain Road, at the cattle guard at the bottom of the hill. In this area you'll see popcorn flowers, buttercups, hummingbird sage, fiddle necks, blue dicks, shooting stars, miner's lettuce, lomatium, sky lupine, Johnny jump-ups and milk maids. A few bends up the road you'll see that Indian paint brush is beginning to bloom on the rock wall to your right. In the next small field on your right are loads of shooting stars, lomatium and Johnny jump-ups. Blue dicks are blooming on both sides of the road. A little further up, on the left, is a slope carpeted with beautiful sky lupine. As you move under the tree canopy, look for Johnny jump-ups, buttercups, fiddle necks, popcorn flower and blue dicks.
